Developing solutions for a safe marketplace

ABOUT US

is a nonprofit that advocates for safer ingredients in everyday products and guides companies towards safer ingredient use and ecosystem-sound products. Nontoxic Certified provides a roadmap for brands to make more sustainable and closed-loop ingredient choices and provides tools to benchmark and share progress with stakeholders and consumers.

OUR PROGRAMS

Nontoxic Certified Programs

The Initial Look™ Evaluation, Transformation Partners program, and the MADE SAFE Certification process utilize the latest science on ingredient and material impacts to promote change for a healthier and more sustainable world.

We make it possible for companies of every size to transition to safer ingredients and create closed-loop products, by providing access to scientifically-analyzed ingredient information and roadmaps to achieve these goals.

Today there is no one universally-recognized standard for better, safer, cleaner, or healthier product formulation and manufacturing. Suppliers, manufacturers, and brands all have different allowances for acceptable ingredients. As a result, it can be nearly impossible to communicate to consumers what is (or is not) in products.

Initial Look™ Evaluation

The Initial Look™ Evaluation provides brands a review and benchmark of products against Nontoxic Certified’s ingredient standards and recommends potential next steps toward safer ingredients. Through the Initial Look Evaluation, formulators, brands, and retailers can learn where potential ingredient issues may exist in an ecosystem screening approach. This information is stored in our Ingredient Database for future screenings, and we continuously work towards closing data gaps on all ingredients in the marketplace.

Transformation Partners

Transformation Partners commit to work towards safer ingredient standards for humans, the environment, and terrestrial and aquatic life. This includes advocating for market change, shifting to safer ingredients, and committing to product innovation. Brands submit products for an ecosystem screening process and receive an assessment from Nontoxic Certified. Transformation Partners will receive a custom plan, access to NTC data, and support research and development for ingredient alternatives. Transformation Partners and Made Safe brands meet annually to share learning and best-practices. Brands can choose to publicly declare action steps for a multi-year plan around their ingredient transformation (such as a plan to protect aquatic life from certain ingredients, etc). Each plan is developed and customized for the brand as appropriate.

MADE SAFE® Certification

MADE SAFE® is a U.S. certification mark that indicates that products meet Nontoxic Certified’s ingredient standards and are free of ingredients which Nontoxic Certified has identified as known or suspected to be harmful to humans, animals, aquatic life and the ecosystem. The MADE SAFE® certification seal gives shoppers a way to know which products are truly made with safe ingredients and offers an ingredient certification standard companies can rely on. www.madesafe.org

MADE SAFE® Certification includes a 360-degree ecosystem review through the MADE SAFE® Ingredient Screening Process to evaluate ingredients to see if they meet the standards which Nontoxic Certified has set to reduce ingredient impacts on human health, the environment and potential harm to terrestrial and aquatic life. If the product meets the standard for MADE SAFE certification, the product is certified and the Brand is granted a license to utilize the MADE SAFE mark for the appropriate product(s) in the agreed upon markets.

The process examines ingredients and materials through our Ingredient Database to ensure there are no known behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents or harmful VOCs used in products. This includes banning over 5,000 ingredients from use in products. We also exercise the precautionary principle and check for the presence of genetically modified organisms, synthetic biology, and nanoparticles to focus the market on safe and sustainable inputs.

The MADE SAFE® Ingredient Screening Process also screens for characteristics beyond known toxicity to confirm that each ingredient does not bioaccumulate, persist in water, sediment and soil, contribute to air pollution, or cause harm to aquatic or terrestrial life.

MADE SAFE® provides a consistent, uniform, and independent certification process for products. This allows brands to demonstrate that specific products adhere to the rigorous and scientific ingredient standards of Nontoxic Certified and MADE SAFE®. This offers consumers easily identifiable safer products with ingredient integrity.

Nontoxic Certified recognizes that the successful companies of tomorrow must be able to compete and excel in a transparent, safe and circular economy. In that paradigm, a crucial step is manufacturing with ingredients that don’t harm or persist in the ecosystem. We work with Brands to guide them on this journey and offer solutions that make it possible to provide this to their consumers.

Brands participating in Nontoxic Certified’s programs are committing to ingredient transparency, the elimination of harmful ingredients from their supply chains and support for supplier ingredient disclosure, while still assuring product performance. Nontoxic Certified ensures that ingredients are assets, not liabilities.

Initial Look Evaluation

Fee by CAS #

An Initial Look Evaluation is a common starting point to evaluate a select set of products against Nontoxic Certified ingredient standards. This is the most efficient and cost-effective way to explore the Nontoxic Certified programs. Brands often use the Initial Look Evaluation to understand if products are likely to qualify for the MADE SAFE Certification or whether steps must be taken to improve ingredient transparency, sourcing or product formulation.

Initial Look evaluations are a flat-fee by CAS #.

Initial Look Evaluation takes approximately two weeks to complete and includes specific recommendations on next steps for participation in Nontoxic Certified programs.

Brands conducting an Initial Look receive information on ingredients that indicate likely questions or problems in an ecosystem screening approach.
